We have had a few days of dull, non-photogenic weather - warm (10° plus), but with some fog, some rain. But today we knew woud be a goodie, so we were prepared, and after getting our ciabatta from the bread man we were off to Cardoso, our newly-discovered walking centre on the other side of the valley.
We wanted to go op to a tiny shepherd's village called San Luigi, which took us on a route traversing the mountain opposite Barga.
The trail took us through chestnut woods mostly, and despite a lot of rain in the night, the paths were fine, although much of the walk was in the shade of the hill we were traversing. There were a few snowdrops peeping out now, and many purple crocuses to add to the magnificent hellebores which have been around now for a several weeks.
The viewpoint of La Croce marked the halfway point to San Luigi, and afforded splendid views of the Serchio valley.

But it has plenty competition among the many characterful older trees around |
